How to Use Clipboard History in Windows 11

Windows 11ClipboardShortcuts

Normally, you copy something with Ctrl+C and paste it with Ctrl+V.

But Windows 11 can remember multiple copied items. The feature is called Clipboard history, and the shortcut is Windows key + V.

Turn Clipboard history on

1. Press Windows+V. 2. If Clipboard history is disabled, select Turn on. 3. Copy some text normally. 4. Copy another piece of text. 5. Press Windows+V again.

Instead of seeing only the most recently copied item, you can choose from items in your clipboard history.

Select the item you want and Windows pastes it into the active application.

Pin things you use frequently

If you regularly paste the same small piece of information, Windows lets you pin an item in clipboard history.

That prevents the pinned item from disappearing simply because newer clipboard entries push older ones out.

Microsoft currently limits clipboard history to 25 copied entries, with older unpinned entries removed as new ones are added.

Remember that copied information can be sensitive

Clipboard history is convenient, but think about what you copy.

Passwords, account numbers, private messages, addresses, and other sensitive information can pass through a clipboard.

If you copied something sensitive and no longer need it there, open Windows+V and clear the appropriate clipboard information.

Windows also offers clipboard synchronization features that can involve cloud syncing. If you do not need cross-device clipboard syncing, there is no reason to turn it on simply because Clipboard history itself is useful.

Clipboard history is not permanent storage

Do not use it as a substitute for a notes application or document.

Clipboard entries can disappear, and clipboard history is intended for temporary convenience rather than long-term storage.

For ordinary copy-and-paste work, however, Windows+V can save a surprising amount of repeated typing.

The bottom line

If you copy and paste frequently, remember two shortcuts: Ctrl+V pastes the latest item, while Windows+V lets you choose from your clipboard history.
