What Are “Optional Driver Updates” in Windows 11?

Windows 11driversWindows Updatetroubleshooting

Windows Update occasionally shows Optional updates, including hardware drivers.

The word “optional” matters.

Microsoft says Windows automatically installs recommended drivers for connected hardware. Optional driver updates, however, are not installed automatically.

You can find them under Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates when they are available.

Do you need every optional driver?

No.

If your computer and its hardware are working normally, the mere presence of an optional driver is not evidence that something is wrong.

Drivers are the software Windows uses to communicate with hardware such as printers, graphics hardware, keyboards, scanners and external drives.

An optional driver can be useful when you are troubleshooting a specific device problem or have another reason to install that particular update.

Randomly installing every optional driver just because Windows lists it adds an unnecessary variable to an otherwise working PC.

When an optional driver can make sense

Suppose Bluetooth, a printer, a graphics device or another piece of hardware is malfunctioning and ordinary Windows updates have not fixed it.

Checking Optional updates can then be a reasonable troubleshooting step.

Microsoft also recommends checking the hardware manufacturer's website if Windows Update cannot find an appropriate driver.

When doing that, use the actual manufacturer's support site rather than a generic “driver updater” download site.

Restart afterward

Microsoft recommends restarting Windows after installing driver updates, even when the update itself does not explicitly demand a restart.

That gives Windows and the hardware another clean opportunity to initialize with the new driver.

The useful rule is simple: keep normal Windows updates current, but treat optional drivers as tools for a reason—not another box that must always be emptied.
