How to Find an Android Notification You Accidentally Swiped Away

AndroidnotificationsNotification historybeginner guidePhones & Tablets

Accidentally dismissed an important Android notification? Your phone may be able to show it again through Notification history.

Open Settings > Notifications and look for Notification history. If your phone supports the feature and history was already enabled, you can see recently dismissed notifications along with notifications from roughly the last day. Google notes that exact menus can vary by device, and some Android devices do not offer notification history at all.

The important catch

Notification history is not a time machine. If the feature was turned off when you dismissed the notification, turning it on afterward may not recover something the phone never recorded.

That makes this a useful setting to enable before you need it.

What notification history is useful for

It is particularly handy when you swipe away a delivery update, verification notice, message alert, or another notification before you have actually read it.

Depending on the phone, you may also be able to tap or hold an entry in notification history to reach additional notification controls.

If you cannot find the setting

Search Settings for Notification history. Android manufacturers sometimes organize Settings differently, and Google specifically warns that availability and menu locations can vary between devices.

If the setting simply does not exist, that does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with your phone.

Bottom line: If your Android phone supports Notification history, turn it on now. The next accidental swipe may be much easier to undo.
