Computer Won't Turn On? Check These Things Before Assuming It's Dead

Troubleshooting & RepairsComputers & Laptops

If your computer shows no signs of life, start with the power source, charger or power cable, external devices, and visible signs of damage before assuming the computer itself has failed.

Do not open a desktop power supply or dismantle a damaged battery.

First, define won't turn on

These are different problems:

The computer has absolutely no lights, fans, sounds, or screen activity.

The computer turns on but the screen stays black.

The manufacturer's logo appears but the operating system doesn't load.

The computer starts and then immediately shuts off.

This article concerns the first case: apparently no power.

Check the obvious power path

For a desktop, make sure the power cable is firmly connected at both ends. Test the wall outlet with another ordinary device if safe to do so.

If you're using a surge protector, confirm that it is switched on.

For a laptop, inspect the charger and cable for obvious damage. If the manufacturer provides a charging indicator, check whether it appears.

Disconnect accessories

Unplug unnecessary USB devices, docks, external drives, printers, and other accessories.

Then try starting the computer again.

A failed accessory or dock can complicate diagnosis.

Give a depleted laptop time

If a laptop battery is completely exhausted, connect the correct charger and leave it connected for a while before trying again.

Don't assume that repeatedly pressing the power button will make a deeply discharged battery charge faster.

Stop if you see battery damage

A swollen battery is not a normal troubleshooting project.

If the case is bulging, the trackpad or keyboard is lifting, the battery is visibly swollen, or you notice smoke, unusual heat, leaking, or a strong abnormal odor, stop using and charging the device and seek qualified service.

Don't open a power supply

A desktop computer's power supply contains hazardous electrical components.

Ordinary consumers should not open it to attempt internal electrical repairs.

If external power checks have failed, a qualified repair technician can test the power supply and other components safely.

What the result tells you

If disconnecting an accessory restores power, reconnect accessories individually to identify the likely culprit.

If a known-good compatible charger restores laptop operation, the original charging equipment may be at fault.

If the computer remains completely lifeless after safe external checks, professional diagnosis is more useful than replacing parts at random.
