How to Check Your Laptop Battery Health in Windows 11

Windows 11BatteryLaptopsHow ToComputers & Laptops

Laptop batteries wear out gradually. If your laptop no longer lasts as long away from the charger, Windows 11 can create a built-in battery report that gives you more information about the battery.

You do not need to install a battery-health program.

This procedure does use Command Prompt, so it is slightly more technical than an ordinary Windows setting. The command itself is simple, and you can copy it exactly.

Create the battery report

1. Select Start. 2. Type Command Prompt. 3. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. 4. Select Yes if Windows asks for permission. 5. Type: powercfg /batteryreport 6. Press Enter.

Windows creates an HTML report and displays the location where it saved the file.

Open File Explorer, go to that location, and double-click the battery-report file. It should open in your web browser.

What should you look at?

The report contains considerably more information than most people need.

Start with Installed batteries, Recent usage, and Battery usage.

Capacity information can also help you understand whether an older battery is holding less energy than it did when it was new. Do not worry about small changes. Rechargeable batteries naturally lose capacity as they age.

The report is diagnostic information, not a simple pass-or-fail battery test. A lower capacity by itself does not prove that your laptop has a fault.

When battery wear becomes a practical problem

The most useful question is whether the battery still meets your needs.

A battery may be worth replacing when the laptop lasts much less time than you need, shuts down unexpectedly while running on battery, or has deteriorated enough that normal portable use has become difficult.

There is one important exception: a swollen battery is a safety issue, not simply an old battery.

If the laptop case, keyboard, or trackpad appears to be lifting or separating because the battery is expanding, stop using the device and do not press, puncture, or attempt to flatten the battery. Have the laptop serviced appropriately.

You do not need a battery optimizer to run this test

Windows already provides the report. Installing an unknown battery-health or “PC optimization” program just to obtain basic battery information is unnecessary.

If your real problem is that the computer itself is running slowly, battery health may not be the cause. See How to Make a Slow Computer Faster Without Buying Anything.

The bottom line

For most Windows 11 laptop owners, powercfg /batteryreport is a useful first check when battery life seems noticeably worse. Generate the report, concentrate on the battery and usage sections, and judge the numbers alongside how the laptop behaves in everyday use.
