Bluetooth Not Working in Windows 11? Try These Checks in Order

Windows 11BluetoothTroubleshooting

Bluetooth problems can come from the accessory, Windows settings, power state, or the computer’s Bluetooth hardware. Start with the reversible checks before reinstalling anything.

Make sure Bluetooth is actually available and turned on

Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices. Confirm Bluetooth is turned on. Microsoft notes that if the Bluetooth setting is missing entirely, the PC may not have a Bluetooth adapter or Windows may not currently recognize it.

Also turn Airplane mode off under Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode.

Check the accessory

Charge or replace the accessory’s batteries if necessary, turn the accessory off and back on, and place it close to the computer while troubleshooting. Make sure it is in pairing mode according to its manufacturer’s instructions.

If the accessory is already listed in Windows but will not connect, remove it from Bluetooth & devices and pair it again. Removing a pairing does not erase files from your PC, but you may need to repeat the accessory’s setup process.

Restart before making deeper changes

Restart the PC. A restart can clear a temporary Bluetooth service or device-state problem without changing drivers or settings.

If Bluetooth still fails, run the Bluetooth troubleshooter available through Windows’ Get Help app. Microsoft recommends automated troubleshooting as an early step for Windows Bluetooth problems.

Check Windows Update and drivers

Open Settings > Windows Update and check for updates. Windows Update can provide compatible driver updates for hardware.

If the problem began after a driver change, or Windows reports a device problem, use Device Manager carefully. Right-click Start > Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, and inspect the Bluetooth adapter. Microsoft documents updating, uninstalling, and reinstalling Bluetooth drivers, but those steps are more invasive than simply restarting or pairing again.

Before manually downloading a driver, identify the PC or Bluetooth-adapter manufacturer and use its official support site. Do not install a random “driver updater” because it claims to have a newer version.

If Bluetooth is missing completely

A missing Bluetooth toggle deserves a different diagnosis from an accessory that simply will not pair. Check Device Manager for a Bluetooth category or an adapter with an error. If the computer never included Bluetooth, you may need compatible external hardware rather than a software fix.

If Device Manager repeatedly loses the adapter, the adapter reports persistent hardware errors, or multiple known-good Bluetooth devices fail after documented troubleshooting, stop repeatedly reinstalling software and check the PC manufacturer’s support information or seek hardware service.
