Before You Update Your iPhone: 5 Things to Check First

Phones & TabletsHow To

Before installing a significant iPhone update, make sure you have a current backup, enough available storage, adequate battery power, a dependable connection, and time to let the phone finish.

Apple says updating iOS normally leaves your data and settings unchanged, but it still recommends backing up before updating.

1. Back up first

A backup is insurance against the unlikely case that something goes badly wrong.

Use your normal iCloud backup or make a computer backup if that's your preference.

The important part isn't which supported method you choose. It's knowing that irreplaceable photos, messages, and other important information aren't dependent on one device.

2. Check available storage

Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.

If the phone is extremely full, review the recommendations and large items before attempting a major update.

Don't start by deleting treasured photos simply to make space. Check downloaded media, unused applications, and other replaceable material first.

3. Plug it in

Don't begin a major update when you need the phone in five minutes.

Give the device time to download, prepare, install, restart, and finish background work afterward.

Apple's automatic-update system can install updates overnight while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi.

4. Know where the update came from

Install iOS updates through Settings > General > Software Update or Apple's supported computer-update process.

A text message or website claiming that your iPhone urgently needs a special security update shouldn't persuade you to install unknown software.

5. Make sure you know important passwords

You shouldn't normally have to rebuild your phone after a routine update, but knowing your Apple Account credentials and device passcode makes recovery easier if additional verification is required.

Install the update

Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

If an update is available, follow the onscreen instructions.

Don't deliberately interrupt the phone while it is installing.

Afterward

Confirm that the phone starts normally and check your most important functions: cellular service, Wi-Fi, messages, photos, email, and any essential apps.

If something isn't working, avoid immediately erasing the phone. Check Apple's current support information for the specific symptom first.
