Before You Trade In an Android Phone, Make Sure You Can Sign Back Into Google

Before you erase an Android phone for a trade-in, sale or hand-me-down, make sure you can sign back into the Google Account connected to it.

A factory reset removes data from the phone, but Android's theft protections are deliberately designed to make a reset device difficult for a thief to reuse without the legitimate owner's account information.

That security is useful until you discover after a reset that you do not remember your own password.

Check the account before erasing anything

Open Settings and find the Accounts, Passwords & accounts, or Google section. The exact menu name varies by phone manufacturer and Android version.

Confirm which Google Account is connected to the device. Then make sure you know its password and can complete any required two-step verification.

If your only verification method is the phone you are about to erase or give away, add or verify another recovery method first.

Confirm your backup separately

Open the phone's backup settings and check when the last backup completed. Photos may be handled separately through Google Photos, so verify photo backup if those pictures matter to you.

Do not assume that seeing a Google Account on the phone means every file on the device exists in the cloud.

Remove accounts at the appropriate point

When preparing a device for another owner, follow the phone manufacturer's official trade-in or reset instructions. Depending on the device, properly removing your Google Account before the final factory reset can help ensure the next owner is not blocked by device protection.

Do not hand over the phone until the reset has finished and the device has returned to its initial setup screen.

The safest order is: verify account access, verify backups, follow the manufacturer's removal/reset instructions, then confirm the phone starts at setup as a clean device.
